First performed in 1979, Brian Friel’s Faith Healer is a play with a formidable reputation. Yet Elizabeth Newman’s production for Pitlochry Festival Theatre is notable for its restraint and transporting intimacy. The staging is sparse and steadfast. The play’s three characters deliver four monologues with the ease of old friends sharing confidences across a café table. As the house lights stay lit throughout we feel almost as though we are part of the action.

The world premiere of this play from Sylvian Productions is far from the first time that the subject of compulsive hoarding has been addressed in theatre. Only a few months ago, Su Pollard, the comedian, appeared in a one-woman show, Harpy, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe playing a character whose chronic inability to give up her possessions had provoked the wrath of her neighbours.

The Latin phrase omne trium perfectum (the notion that everything that comes in threes is complete) is being put to the test at the Fringe this year. Not only is the award-winning Scottish theatre company Stellar Quines premiering its production of The Deliverance – the final instalment in a trilogy written by the Québécoise playwright Jennifer Tremblay – audiences have the opportunity to see the three instalments back-to-back for the first time.
