We tend to associate adaptations of The Iliad with scale, visual riches, casts of thousands. As recently as 2016, Mark Thomson chose to mark the end of his tenure as artistic director of Edinburgh’s Lyceum with a lavish production of Homer’s epic, as reworked by Chris Hannan, the Scottish playwright.

There’s a wealth of Greek literature in Scottish theatre at present. The blood is still wet on the stage at Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum (during the current run of Chris Hannan’s adaptation of Homer’s Iliad), as the curtain begins to rise on this ambitious reimagining of Aeschylus’s Oresteia trilogy, with a punchy, contemporary version of the text by the playwright Zinnie Harris.

A stage version of The Iliad, scripted by Chris Hannan and directed by Mark Thomson, is a mouth-watering prospect. The playwright has form when it comes to adaptions of the classics, having penned multi-award-winning productions of Crime and Punishment and The Three Musketeers, while Thomson, who is stepping down as artistic director of the Lyceum, is at his best when marshalling large ensembles through rich, intricate stories.

What better way to kick off the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company’s 50th anniversary season than with a play about two old friends who have stuck together, for better or worse, for half a century? This much-anticipated Beckett revival, directed by departing artistic director Mark Thomson, also brings the careers of its two stars full circle. While Brian Cox was a founding member of the original Lyceum ensemble, Bill Paterson first performed in Edinburgh in 1972 as part of Billy Connolly’s The Great Northern Welly Boot Show.
